Holiday Pfeffernusse Cookies Recipe
A spicy and crunchy traditional German holiday favorite.
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup light molasses
1 tablespoon hot water
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon anise extract
3 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon white pepper
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Combine brown sugar, shortening, molasses, water, egg and anise extract and mix well. Stir in remaining ingredients and knead until stiff enough to mold. Shape into 3/4 inch balls and place about 1 inch a part on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake about 12 minutes or until bottoms are golden brown. Remove from cookie sheet and cool on a wire rack.
