Understanding Cardiorespiratory Activities
Cardiovascular and cardiorespiratory fitness are synonymous. However, cardiorespiratory
fitness is the term used in most current textbooks. It best describes the
health and function of the heart, lungs and circulatory system.
What are Cardiorespiratory
Activities?
Cardiorespiratory activities are sustained for sufficient time to evoke the
aerobic energy system (longer than five minutes) but arent performed at intensity
greater than approximately 85 percent of maximal capacity.
Monitoring Exercise
Intensity
Once you determine the appropriate level of cardiorespiratory intensity, accurate
monitoring of the intensity level ensures that the member reaches his or her
fitness goals in the least amount of time.
Exercise Time
(Duration)
Exercise time or duration refers to the span of time during which exercise
is performed, not including warm-up and cool-down.
Exercise Type (Mode)
Selecting an exercise type or mode for a member should be based on the persons
goals, functional capacity, interests, available equipment and time constraints.
